The document serves as a reference to parents interested in pursuing local Summer Day Camps for children. Please be sure to do the necessary research to ensure that any of these camps would be the best and safest fit for your student. Resources Library Sacred Heart School has two fully functioning libraries that have open-access times throughout the week and are connected to computer labs. The labs are used for research, projects, and other activities that supplement and enhance the curriculum. There are 68 computers, 16 printers, 3 interactive White Boards, 10 digital cameras, and 6 projectors. Science Laboratory Our middle division science laboratory is always busy. Students look at slides in the microscope, explore human anatomy, or create a volcano. Mr. Fiesta, our science consultant, oversees these activities. Technology Integration Sacred Heart partners with Education LLC to provide the latest in technological advancements to our students. From SMART Boards to digital cameras to Power Point presentations to Windows updates, our students learn in a technology-rich environment. Reading First Reading First is a New York State funded initiative designed to train teachers in the best practices for teaching reading skills. Our teachers work with a reading coach who helps build their pedagogical skills. Through Reading First support, teachers receive instructional and assessment tools consistent with scientifically based reading research in order to ensure that all children learn to read well by the end of third grade. Extracurricular Programs Sacred Heart Afterschool Enrichment Program We are very excited to offer a program that strives to support the needs of children through academic, recreational and social opportunities that enhance school day learning and build upon individual strengths and interests. It is our goal to involve your child in various activities designed to enrich and excite. Please see additional information in attached flyer. Afterschool Brochure Side 1.jpg Afterschool Brochure Side 2.jpg Urban Voices This year with the help of the Metropolitan Opera Guild's Education Office we are offering weekly choral instruction. A professional choral teacher leads each Urban Voices class. Students learn a variety of musical techniques and methods. Classroom teachers actively participate in the choral sessions and work together to produce concerts. Parents are invited to attend concerts in the spring. Dancing Classrooms Sponsored by the American Ballroom Theatre (ABrT) the Dancing Classrooms program is an arts-in-education program residency teaching ballroom dance to our 4th and 5th grade students. Students participate in weekly lessons, have a performance at the end of the semester and the opportunity compete in the Dancing Classrooms "Colors of the Rainbow Team-Match Competition." Furthermore ABrT offers students who have completed the residency the opportunity to continue ballroom lessons at their Academy downtown. Classroom, Inc. With generous funding from the Altman Foundation, we offer the Classroom Inc. after-school program to our 5-8 grade students. Classroom Inc. engages students with an innovative curriculum that helps them develop the academic skills essential to success in school and the workplace. Its What's Up Magazine module allows students working in small groups to learn about the structure of a magazine staff. As editor-in-chief of a magazine, students are introduced to the world of publishing. They engage in activities such as researching story topics, editing stories, choosing photographs and graphics, and reviewing budgets and advertising goals. Visual Arts The Creative Classroom Visual Arts Program (CCVAP) provides studio art classes to all students at Sacred Heart School. Our two art teachers facilitate students' creativity through exercises that bring out their voices and talents. The artistic work of our student community is displayed in our school halls. Basketball Teams The school has three CYO basketball teams: Boys Varsity, Boys Junior Varsity, and Girls Junior Varsity. The basketball program is open to students in grades 4-8. The students practice daily after school and compete against area schools. Under the dedicated supervision of Sacred Heart's Athletic Director, Mr. John Feighery, our athletes improve skills and learn valuable lessons about teamwork and competition. Photography Club The Shutterbug Club allows our 8th grade teacher, Jose Rivera, to share his photography skills. Weekly he shows students how to hold a camera steadily, how to use each camera setting, and explains to them the qualities that make a beautiful photo. Students go on field trips, take pictures of school events, and do their own fundraising for new equipment. Step Team We have two step teams at Sacred Heart with 15 girls in grades 7 and 8. They practice once a week after school in the auditorium. Under the direction of Davina Ruiz, our step team has learned a variety of skillful dance moves that have been a wonderful addition to school events and shows. Dance Team The dance team has 15 girls this year in grades 6-8. The dance team has always set the bar high for skill and dance, and its auditions are eagerly anticipated each year. Ajeia. Brown and her team work 4 hours after school per week to flawlessly master their routines. They perform at the annual Hispanic Heritage Festival, at basketball games, and at other school events. Fencing Constance Usera, a past competitive fencer, leads the Fencing team. She instructs the group of 12 students in grades 5-8 with the proper equipment, dress, and the technique necessary to fence properly and safely. The students face one another in duels conducted safely in the school auditorium during their weekly meetings. Piano School of New York Our students have the option of taking piano lessons at Sacred Heart from piano teachers. This program has inspired considerable musical achievement in many of our students. |
