  • New Classrooms for the New School Year

    When our doors opened for the school year this September, students barely recognized their old classrooms. Thanks to funding from the Louis Calder Foundation, a long-time Partnership supporter, Sacred Heart and the other five Partnership schools were dramatically transformed over the summer.

  • Partnership Welcomes Director of High School Placement

    Sacred Heart’s mission is to provide students with a great education and also to set them up for success after they graduate. Recognizing that high school is an extremely important next step for students, this fall the Partnership Schools welcomed Sherrie Henry as the High School Placement Director for the network. Sherrie will work with students and parents at all six Partnership schools to guide them through the high school selection and application process.

  • Papal Visit Shines a Light on Partnership Schools

    Sacred Heart School is usually abuzz when our students’ energy fills the halls at the beginning of the school year, but this year there was extra excitement with Pope Francis’ visit to New York City. The fact that he was visiting a Partnership School – Our Lady Queen of Angels (OLQA) in East Harlem – only added to the thrill. When all was said and done, Pope Francis’ time at OLQA on September 25th was one of the most unique, upbeat moments of his trip to the United States.

  • Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Murray

    On Monday, April 13th, Barnes & Noble invited Sacred Heart 3rd-5th grade students to celebrate one of our 4th grade teachers, Ms. Murray. A poem written by one of her former students, Jennifer A., was selected as the winner amongst the entries received at the Barnes & Noble Upper East Side store in the annual “My Favorite Teacher Contest.”

  • 10th Annual Yankees Benefit

    July 2015
    On Tuesday, June 9th, Sacred Heart welcomed supporters to campus for the tenth annual Yankees Benefit. The event was our most successful yet, raising over $16,000 to go towards after-school tutoring for struggling students at Sacred Heart. Before the game, guests met in the courtyard of the Sacred Heart rectory for an old fashioned cookout. There were many new faces this year, as several of our guests from past benefits returned with friends in tow. We were excited to introduce them to the Sacred Heart community.

  • Discovering Fire with Lauren Delfavero, Director of Math Achievement

    Selected by Kathleen Porter-Magee to join the Partnership’s academic team, Lauren DelFavero serves as Director of Math Achievement. Ms. DelFavero comes to the Partnership most recently from Success Academy Charter Schools. Last year, all of her 5th graders passed the NY State math test with 96% of students scoring “fours” – the highest level. Ms. DelFavero looks forward to achieving the same results for all students in the network.

  • Bright Futures Ahead for Graduating 8th Graders

    As this school year drew to a close, the Sacred Heart family said its goodbyes to the Class of 2014. On Friday, June 13th, the departing 8th graders entered Sacred Heart for the last time as students before their graduation ceremony. 54 out of our 57 8th graders applied to Catholic high schools and all 54 were accepted.

  • Annual Yankee’s Benefit 2014

    On Tuesday, June 3rd, friends of Sacred Heart joined students and school staff for the 9thAnnual Yankees Benefit, sponsored by the Sacred Heart School Board. The evening is always exciting for the Sacred Heart students who attend since many, despite living close to the stadium, have not had the opportunity to see the famed Yankees in action. Even the rainy weather could not put a damper on the event, which built on the success of recent years with a record number of adult attendees. With a total of 60 guests and 30 students, and thanks to the hard work and dedication of all of those involved, the event raised over $16,000!

  • SHS Pilots Bronx Children’s Museum Program

    Sacred Heart is thrilled to be a part of an educational pilot program, Little Friends of High Bridge (LFHB), through the Bronx Children’s Museum. The program provides an opportunity for children in the Highbridge neighborhood to learn more about the landmark “High Bridge” and the Harlem River, which are just a few blocks away from Sacred Heart. The Bronx Children’s Museum, Highbridge Community Life Center, Bronx Historical Society and NYC Department of Environmental Education launched LFHB as a way to celebrate the upcoming reopening of the High Bridge.

  • Students Meet and Compete at Chess Open

    The Sacred Heart auditorium was transformed into a chess arena on Friday, April 11th, for the First Annual Partnership Network Chess Open. Students from the six Partnership network schools participated in the event, which was organized by Chess NYC and the Partnership for Inner-City Education. Over 100 kids from grades Pre-K to 8 played in the Open.

  • Sacred Heart Alum Gives Back

    When Richard Arvedlund lived in Highbridge, he was able to pay his tuition by delivering newspapers and selling hot dogs at Yankees games. Though this and much more has changed since he graduated from Sacred Heart in 1955, Mr. Arvedlund’s love for his elementary school remains. Mr. Arvedlund decided to give back to Sacred Heart because he wants to help students receive the same support that he got through a Sacred Heart education.

  • Eighth Graders Plan Next Steps

    Though graduation is months away, eighth graders have already spent significant time preparing for their journeys to high school. Several new resources were put in place this year to strengthen students’ applications and guide families through the daunting school selection process. Test prep courses, after-school activities and a Secondary School Advisor are all available to support eighth graders as they prepare for life beyond Sacred Heart.

    While other kids spend the after-school hours hanging out with friends or watching TV, many Sacred Heart students are learning new skills and developing hobbies in their after-school enrichment activities. This year Sacred Heart expanded its existing program, continuing to offer peace-of-mind to working parents while introducing students to activities they may not have been exposed to elsewhere.

  • School Yard Spruce-Up Wows SHS Families

    Parents and students could not believe their eyes when they returned to Sacred Heart on the first day of school. After a summer of renovation, the main entry yard has been transformed into a beautiful space that welcomes students and impresses visitors. The yard now features bright orange walls, purple circles on the gate and many live plants. Large portions of the ground were replaced with Astroturf, creating the feel of a small park, and a giant outdoor chalkboard has been installed.

  • Eighth Graders Say Goodbye

    This year has flown by for Sacred Heart’s Class of 2013. Since September, students have faced the challenge of juggling high school applications and state test preparation in addition to regular schoolwork. To celebrate their achievements through the years, 8th graders enjoyed several special activities as graduation approached. When graduation day arrived on June 14th, students said emotional goodbyes to teachers and friends.

  • Annual Yankees Benefit 2013!

    The sun was shining on Highbridge for Sacred Heart’s 8th annual Yankees Benefit on June 4th. Nearly 90 attendees enjoyed an evening of food, fun and baseball. Prior to the game, Advisory Board members and their guests met on the Rectory patio to enjoy a barbecue dinner.  The group then progressed to Yankee Stadium to see the Yankees take on the Indians. This year’s event was the most successful yet, raising over $16,500 that will be used to support tutoring and test preparation programs at Sacred Heart.

  • Eighth Grader Joins Jeter’s Leaders Program

    We congratulate 2013 graduate Sata D., who was accepted into the prestigious Jeter’s Leaders program. Sata impressed during a series of interviews and secured one of the few spots open to area 8th graders. Founded by the Yankees shortstop, the program mentors students through high school, providing them with experiences that involve community service, leadership skills and college preparation. Two 2009 graduates were the most recent representatives of Sacred Heart in the program.

  • Sacred Heart Receives Project YESS Funding

    May 2013
    Sacred Heart received $13,423 in funding through the Project YESS Grant, which chose just 15 schools to receive this funding for capital projects. Sacred Heart will use the grant to replace sets of stairwell doors to ensure the continued fire safety of staff and students. With the help of the Partnership for Inner-City Education, Sacred Heart will soon undergo additional updates to bolster safety and extend the future of the school building.

  • Science Fair Projects Impress at Bronx Science Fair

    For two months, students worked hard to create and conduct experiments for this year’s Science Fair. Grades K through 8 presented their work to official judges including our Science Consultant, Ms. Jasmine Maldonado. Students who placed first in their grade presented their projects at the Bronx Science Fair on March 14th. We are very proud of our 8th grade team, who received Second Place for their project!

  • Sacred Heart Receives Violin Donation

    March 2013
    Sacred Heart is extremely grateful to have received a donation of 15 violins from Mondomusica for Children. Principal Akano accepted the violins with select students at a special concert at St. Patrick’s Cathedral inManhattan. The concert featured the skilled violin students of Mount Carmel Holy Rosary and gave Sacred Heart students an idea of what they can accomplish with our violin program.
