Sacred Heart Student 1st Place Winner in State Senate Annual Earth Day Poster Contest

Senator Serrano presents Amaris V. with a large replica of her drawing

November 3, 2014

Monday saw our very own fifth grader, Amaris V., awarded her first prize from District 29 State Senator Serrano.  Amaris’s art work was chosen from hundreds of entries from students in the South Bronx, East Harlem and the Upper West Side as they vied for best in show for New York State’s Annual Earth Day Poster Contest.   As the 1st place winner, Amaris's drawing was displayed in Albany, NY and a replica given to her by the Senator himself on the morning of November 3rd.  During his visit to Amaris's art class, the Senator congratulated her, and answered students’ questions.  As Senator Serrano noted in his own words, "Amaris created original artwork that best conveyed the concepts of environmental respect and preservation. Her artwork was chosen by the NY State Senate as the best, and today I have the honor of presenting her with an enlarged copy of her artwork.” To make the day complete, Amaris was joined by her proud parents and her art teacher, Mr. Moakler, along with all of her classmates. Congratulations Amaris, and thank you for caring so much about our environment!
